HASENHERZ is an interdisciplinary cultural association founded by Ruth Anderwald + Leonhard Grond. What began as a nomadic format for screenings and conversations around contemporary moving-image art has evolved into a platform for collaboration, artistic research, participatory learning and critical exchange. Today, HASENHERZ develops long-term international projects at the intersection of art, arts-based research, remembrance culture, intergenerational political education and art mediation. Many of these projects are developed in collaboration with international partners and supported by European funding programmes.
At the heart of HASENHERZ lies the conviction that art can open spaces for dialogue, participation, and shared critical reflection. HASENHERZ draws inspiration from Arnold Schönberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances (1918), which sought to create intimate and focused settings for engaging with contemporary art and thought.
Over the years, HASENHERZ has reached more than 20,500 people through workshops, exhibitions, screenings, and public interventions and 130,000 people on social media. The association has been recognised by the European Commission as a best-practice example for its innovative response to the COVID-19 crisis and as a Creative Europe best-practice project for transcultural collaboration by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport. These recognitions reflect HASENHERZ’s ongoing commitment to experimental cultural work and to creating meaningful connections across generations, cultures, languages and borders.
